If I Could Only Have You Back I sat down at the table Just to reminisce awhile- To thumb through some old albums. What I saw brought back some smiles. There we were still in our twenties, I was wearing faded jeans... As you clutched my arm so proudly, Like I'd just fulfilled your dream. Then another, with the buckle- That meant so much back then. You applauded with the others, Helped to celebrate my win... It must have been the lighting, But I saw upon your face, A shadow, was it sorrow? Loneliness, smiles can't erase? Several other pictures followed- But in these I stood alone. I was burning up the circuit, But the smiling girl was gone... Age and injuries beset me- Wins were few and far between. Gone the public adoration, Gone the rolls of folding green... I'm another "has-been" rider, Worn out truck and riggin' sack. I'd give all I ever had, girl- If I could only have you back. |
