It was pain and loneliness
which brought me to this point,
a dash of despair and a need
to sing the requiem
while still of voice.

Influences whose confluence
like the Allegheny and Monongahela
would ideally merge to form
a stronger flow, in the same
direction under a more manageable
heading, like the Ohio.

Not so much sink or swim
as bob and weave occasionally
gasping but then,
sometimes making sense
of the gurgle.

Tributaries test temperatures
and the pace, streaming
both freshness and pollutents
into overall experience.

The heart pumps a red, heavy
flow but too includes oxygen
in a life giving performance
where insistent buoyancy
carries a long way down
the river we travel.

I'll take the intermittent rapids
so long as the overall journey
averages an eased passing
of the tide and time
and the trip includes some moments
lazing in a warming sun.

If in its progress this
river reveals a snag in the form
of a teasing bobber of hope
whose hook's baited with
the lure of Love I'll bite,

but know the journey's
taken alone and ends
in a sea of forever.

RSWells~
Oh, I like this so much.
The mention of two of my favorite poetically-named rivers had a bunch-a-lot to do with the enjoyment~
And it 'twarn't the Ohio !
Thank you~

Very well said! Wonderful metaphor. The whole poem is fantastic, but this part is wise and promising. Enjoyed so much!

Yes, love or no love, alone in the end! Very interesting and sagely presented poetry.
You have a very talented pen and I always enjoy your work as it's a far reach from the norm yet so attainable!
