The Farewell

Standing in the shadows
Like a tragic cameo.
I glimpsed the two young lovers,
As the lad prepared to go.

From the waist up he was naked-
But his pants were Rebel gray...
As his southern belle fought bravely,
Just to hold her tears at bay.

"I will write you", was his promise-
As he gently bade farwell.
"For my orders came this morning,
I'll be gone for quite a spell".

Through two years she waited bravely-
Letters few and far between.
His last letter spoke of being home
By the time the grass turned green.

Then one morning in the garden-
Her mother slowly came...
In her heart a dread was forming,
With her lips she formed his name...

Then her mother slowly handed her-
The missal edged in black,
And her world came down around her,
For he won't be coming back.

Very nicely written, my friend...so many saw it that way.

This is a possibility we all dread.  James
