The Horse Or Delusions Of Gradeur

He was such a beautiful horse to look at
And on such a back you’ve never ever sat
His eyes were mysterious and so deep
Full of dreams that he would ever keep
Never would he forget he had his pride
Only the best on him would he let ride
He held his head high as he rode on by
The mares looked on and heaved a sigh

He’d call to them as he stood all alone.
Come and race with me in the sea foam
The mares would whinny and call back
Oh yes guide us onto your special track
He knew he was perfect in every way
He was great what else would they say
He dreamed of all the mares he’d win
He would start soon he had to begin

All he wanted was to have horsy play
But slowly all the mares were led away
All his careful plans and all his schemes
Now lay in the dust as broken dreams
Why would they all leave him alone there?
When he was the one that would care
There’s something that he didn’t know
That his magnificence is only for show

He bore a mark of a single white star
Was fated to travel but not get very far
In his head all his plots and tricky plans
Would take him far into foreign lands
In reality he won’t go anywhere at all
He’ll be at his mistress’s beck and call
He’s a gelding his plans are of no avail
There’s nothing under his flowing tail

No high flown ideas or his supple grace
Will give him access to the special race
There’ll be no Star to follow him on
No foal to frolic in the pleasant sun
No one to teach his ways of mystery
No son to carry on his crowned beauty
His going will disappoint the mares I fear
Maybe they’ll shed at his passing a tear

Marsha

Take back the hope you gave,- I claim
Only a memory of the same
