The Memory Spaces
Virginia Salter

the memory spaces
in my mind
rest deeply in the folds
some more deeply than others
making it an extra challenge
to retrieve them

yet, those so deep-seated,
are they not more precious,
oh, yes, surely,
for they are tucked away securely
so no one may trifle with them
no one may steal them

no one may destroy
their value
so then I may go apart
rest in a moment of solitude
and exude them to the fore
to caress my heart with them
to weep my tears of joy for their having

snatches of childhood,
adolescence,
both mine and my daughter's
where sometimes the joy
is spawned from the elation
from having endured them and won
and else from the pure glee
of having been blessed by them

each memory
great or small
sweet or sour
acrid or savory
is a building block
to the person I am today
the strong and weak of me
the loving and kind of me
the friend I can be

they are my feet,
my sinew,
my heart

may my head be guided
for the better
by the meat and milk
of my memories

Hey VAS... like the idea of this one..those memories being stored in the deeper recesses and all... might want to look at condensing it a bit though..of course you know my preference for shorter works so take that with a grain of salt...

some good lines in here!

yep, I think it could definitely be condensed, it just flowed onto the page as it is and I know I should take a better look at it. thanks for reading and the critique!

Tipping my hat to the master of brevity, I would agree that a little condensing of this would add impact....

but I like the idea, and of course, whenever I think of the word "folds" for some reason blankets come to mind...

for others, it's meringue being folded into a cake's batter....

go figure...

Enjoyed this VAS....more, please, but condensed, of course!

Virginia, over the years I have learned the importance of memories, I have so many of loved ones who have moved away. Treasure them forever, beautiful poem and thanks for stirring up a few of my own memories.
snatches of childhood,
adolescence,
both mine and my daughter's
where sometimes the joy
is spawned from the elation
from having endured them and won
and else from the pure glee
of having been blessed by them

shadows flicker sweet end tame
dancing like crazy mourners" magazine

LOL, Thanks, Krawdad...and that from the "3 line-poet reknown" Heh heh heh.

One of the areas I was considering omitting ended up being the part that citizenx particularly liked, go figure.  I will work on paring it down some, as long as I don't take away any of the meat or milk of it.

Thanks all for reading and your wonderful comments!!!

Thoughtful piece Virginia...I agree that they are all part of who we are now...

they are my feet,
my sinew,
my heart

Thanks for the memory meander

VAS,

the title pulled me in...

i have a fetish for memories myself but recently i find it hard to face up to my reality..i hope i will find it within myself to treasure my past, like the speaker in the poem...

Wonderful ramble on the marvels of memories Virginia. I like this summation.....

               "each memory
                great or small
                sweet or sour
                acrid or savory
                is a building block
to the person I am today
the strong and weak of me
the loving and kind of me
                the friend I can be"

Beautifully penned!
