                School Day Blues

The summer dragged on, with fighting and screams,
Windows were broken and weary were dreams.
I  grew hoarse from my pleas, for a moment of peace,
They laughed and ran through leaving foot trails of grease.

I prayed for this day, the first day of school,
Both monsters captured  and tamed with firm rule.
But today is the day, and I am shocked to admit
I am missing them terribly, even the fits.

I walk through the house, already back clean,
No shoes to trip over,  just a blinding fresh gleam.
No “mommy, mommy,” being yelled in my ear.
No scraped knees and boo boos to kiss until clear.

I should have danced with joy through my house like a blizzard,
But instead spent an hour, talking to their lizard.
I folded their clothes, and noticed strange tears.
The dream of all day  wasn’t as  imagined for nine years.

Do I want to go back, to the diapers and bottles?
To the crumbs on the floor and the chubby legged toddles?
Heaven forbid I even consider it  at all
I must learn to have a life, and get past withdrawls.

I’m sure I’m not the first to weep like a fool,
in a house normally rowdy, silenced by school.
But I will survive, I am sure that I will,
Even if it requires a hefty therapy bill.

(chuckling)... very cute..and while the subject and the feeling is serious..the treatment in the poem and the use of humor lightens it to the enjoyment of the reader...

as for therapy... I suggest a new interest to occupy your time and mind... something YOU enjoy

Oh how well I remember those first days of school. The house was too quiet and I could be found sitting on the porch at 3:30 pm just waiting for my 3 sons to come home.
Thank you for the trip back.

You know...you really choke me up sometimes, now turn the bathroom story into a poem somehow and you will become the resident comic, and you said you weren't a poet?  Hogwash!  This was great!

If you have but one true friend when you die you were truly blessed

Very comical and sincere. A poem from a mother's heart. I enjoyed the memories. I would relax. For it is so nice when they come home and offer to fix you dinner. Just so you'll take them to the mall!
Sincerely,
Regina

Great reflections presented with a flair for undertones of humour supporting the poem's seriousness. I really enjoyed the read!

I can certainly relate! This was
wonderful...as much as the little munchkins
can drive you to the breaking point...you
begin to realize there is no better place to
be.  Great write!
