A genie, drawn in wisp of smoke
arose from lamp by belly stroke.
"Wish wisely." He said this with a smile.
His eyes were cold with Temptor's wile.

"For my freedom from the lamp?
To you, I give, three wishes grant.
Of two, just one can be undone
by wishing for reverse of sun."

I barely heard these words he spake
for all the treasure dreamt to take.
All the gifts of every land
were mine for asking--my command.

I pictured palace on a hill,
that sparkled gold in greedy fill;
with crystal roads that led to door
and servant's trays that spilled with more.

Visions that were bliss to me
from lifetime spent...upon my knees.
Never daring eyes that greet
and all my tears, in wash of feet.

The genie smiled seductively.
He saw my thoughts. He smiled through me.
"Tell me, how much will you need?
What is capacity of greed?"

I could not answer. 'Round my throat
was chattel of a golden yoke.
How heavy laden riches bind
in thread of finest gold--refined.

I crumbled then, beneath the weight--
the magnitude of my mistake...
Humility upon the floor,
as he grinned: "Still want more?"

I replied in sigh of why:
"All my flesh be crucified.
Always something, to placate--
the burn of yearn in satiate."

"Second wish," smiled He to me.
He softened, crooned "most carefully..."
But I knew what must be done.
My second wish reversed the sun.

All the gold returned to vein--
and my life became the same.
Sometimes within, at times with not--
but grateful for the things I'd got.

"Now." He smiled at me in glee--
"Just one more to ask of me.
Tell me what it is you'd be.
"Choose," he warned. "Choose carefully."

'Twas then I felt the inner flame
and saw how quickly I became
all that I did once despise
and then I stared at Genie's eyes:

I saw they were my own.

"There was no push from sacred lamp.
Always, I've been there, encamped...
just awaiting what you'd do--
should you be granted wishes true."

"For the last, just take your time."
From the lamp, he poured fine wine--
nectar from the God's own sup
and bade me drink till I filled up.

Then came gluttonly of rhyme--
intensity of liquid time.
My lips were limber--almost filled--
and then I choked: "I want free will.

All your promises, recant--
nothing more but taunt of rant.
Genie take your magick spell--
begone with you to depths of hell.

Remove me from the demon's stamp-
For my last wish? RETURN TO LAMP."

Damn this was amazing, I think you wished a fourth wish, to have golden words of poetry flow from your pen.

Okay, I now have a favourite by you - and, of course, my library must have this gem!
I love this poem, can I borrow your muse?!

Thanks to all. I just got to thinking about what it was I truly valued--and this came pouring out. And laughing to myself, cause Marge? Brilliance? HA! You should have seen how many edits I did to get this just centered...hardly brilliant, but thanks anyhow.   HUGS and LOVE to you all.
