Keeping Time

I am in the tall grasses
and weeds of the vacant lots
of California childhood

Starched and pressed
white dress
green in spring
from romping trails through mustard.

Tip toe through the yellow blossoms
sit down in such a way
no one can see you
a magical world
of ant colonies and honey bees
pretend so small
the dandelion leaf
is your umbrella.

Back in that sharply painted
flower field
my mother
pulled fox tails from socks
bleached grass stains
with the vision of imagination.

The mustard fields
were the undertow
pulling me up into curves.
I can still smell
the weed killer
used against the vacant lot
where I would hide

The sprinkler
endlessly ticks familiar,
the clock also,
keeping time
to heart beat
and footsteps.

but...
I can still return
to the tall grasses
and weeds
of California childhood
and take you with me.

the heart finds its morning
and is refreshed.

The tak-a whish tak-a whish tak-a whish of the irrigation sprinklers are still in my ears, and the smell of the mustard, flowered so fully...why, they weren't WEEDS...they were BOUQUETS....

why, did you sit in my spot?  And watch out for that bee....it stung me right "here"....

Great poem, as a child we could spend years in the emagination of a field or a vacant lot. Great stuff this growing up.

Throw your heart out in front of you
And run out to catch it.

Martie-
   This is wonderful!
   I especially like this...

      "pretend so small
      the dandelion leaf
      is your umbrella."

Thanks for the memories, sweet lady.

Martie,
What a wonderful palette you use. My childhood was asphalt cobble stones and cement. But still it brought back memories.

Well if anyone can keep time as accurate as this it is most assuredly going to be you.  What a treat to be swept up in and take me back to my youth. The only thing is, for me it was cotton fields and dirt but it was just as sweet a memory and I thank you for bringing it home.  Love the flow, the imagery, and definitely love the Martie touch you so delicately add always.
