Shadow Lover

If we had met
while we walked the same path,
before the fork where our lives diverged,
would you have loved me then?
Would you have loved me
with all your life,
given me a place in the center of your heart,
twined my soul and yours
'till even God couldn't tell them apart?
If we had touched
there on that trail,
would you have felt the things
that I feel now,
the ever-there,
the single-bond of two
that were meant to be one?
Shadow lover,
just beyond the veil of out of sight,
loving a stranger we both believe is there,
we wait together though far apart
for the paths we walk to again converge,
for the love we share in a twilight world
to push back the night with its burning fire
rivaling the sun
as the brightest of lights.
Shadow lover,
feel the kiss of my heart tonight.
