the ring – recalled for Samia

1988
gaunt would have described
but thoughts of Auschwitz
filled my brain,
recalling we, of
Germanic heritage, I could
not bring myself to thin[k] him
more than
gaunt…

knowing that he had not
fought that war, nor any other
but life’s, and more, but
none of his making,
only inherited…

which he kept to himself…

what he did not keep
hidden
was his honor, given
freely, his word,
handshaked by confirm,

great grins of knowing,
blue eyes of past, sheltering
to keep those he loved
from harm of
knowledge
that we have since thirsted
for

that was the man…

later, in a coming together
before the passing of his
wife, we bled as one in the
back yard, and in scooping
through planted memories
of yesterday, there was
uncovered in tomatoes’ dirt
that he so
loved, a ring

turquoised red/triangled blue
tarnished silver capped, my
brother saying, “look”
and I, saying “one of my
first memories” and
he looked and I
looked then he
placed in my
palm Dad’s
ring

it should have been his
for he owned Dad’s blue eyes
but he deferred, “my
hands are too
large”

knowing they were probably
a same fit

I wear it,
now and then,
it cannot be taken in for
sprucing up, so I adorn myself
when dressing down
but I feel lifted
for I recall the day Dad missed
it and said

“someday, we will find it”

and safe am I in
knowing he was there
in the finding

A lovely story Sunshine, your memories become so vivid in my mind, when the ring was found I pictured your father's hand and his love for you both, so sad that we must all one day pass on, but to be recalled and embrassed by words makes one immortal.

Rick.
A nice write with feelings of love.

Dear Sunshine,
Wow! I can't believe I almost missed this! I love the way it flows from one stanza to another and how you play with the words. It's beautiful and touching. I really enjoyed it, thanks for reposting.

Maeve, thank you for coming in to read...

Zinsser, thank you....

Marge, sending {{hugs}} right back...

Rick, the ring resides safely in my jewelry chest...except on days when I'm wearing bluejeans...

Samia, this was not a repost - one of your lovely poems brought back this memory...thank you for reading, and I am glad you enjoyed...
