when my grandmother was in the hospital
after a car accident
they asked her
"who is the president
of our country?"
and she didn't know
she just didn't know

they couldn't explain it but
she could
"I normally wouldn't know
who the president is!
That's just how I am!"

but they kept her overnight
"just to be safe"
because they were afraid
of not knowing
because it must be
dangerous
if you don't remember something so
simple

like when you forget someone's name
who you knew like a sister ten years ago
that must be dangerous
because it hurts
and what else could cause that but
something
bad?

if you can forget a fact
that's been drilled into you
by the media in everything around you
can't you forget how to
look both ways
before crossing the street
count your change
use your computer
drive your car
do everyday and therefore
simple
tasks?

YES

I have to look for my keys everyday. I forget what I went into a room for. I put milk in the cabinet, cereal in the fridge. I think this qualifies. But not dangerous. Good message!

7--It is distressing to find a piece of thought has just evaporated...only to come back hours later sticking its tongue out.  It happens to me all the time. Your poem is poignant in its simple truth...thank you.

I am only 19 and I forget everything already...if she's dangerous, I can't imagine what I am!

Seriously though, this was a very touching poem that illustrates well the pain and confusion of watching someone you love go through a distressing situation.

thanks all!

yeah, it's empathy but more to say that there's nothing to be distressed about. in the wise words of jewel, "we're all ok."
