LOOKING IN

love does not long survive
when it is kept
outside
the heart

I believe you love me
as you have
loved
others

but you can not love us
long
or well
because you can not
invite us in

you have given over
too much room
within you
to darker things

I will not force
my way in
or beg

but bide yet a while
in this meager warmth
which comes
from hope

Constance,
I think we all,

but bide yet a while
in this meager warmth
which comes
from hope

Enjoyed.

thanks everyone, actually this is one of a group of dark-themed pieces which I add to on occasion.  Collectively, they're called "the dead heart chronicles". Would you believe, this is one of the lighter ones?---you know, therapy stuff.

A heart that's closed will only view love from without... Nicely said, Constance...

Constance, sounds like love is not being too kind, and the man that you love holds you at arms length. Love is a mutual thing, which should come naturally; true love will come without the begging and hurt of wonder.

Take care.
Good read.

Shannon-I hope your feeling is in the past, I wish you happier ones!

Nan- True indeed! Thanks.

Rick- Thanks for your comment. Happy to report that this is not a current situation.
