Keening
_______

it was just a word
I had seen it in old books
an old-fashioned word

I looked it up
it means
to utter a high
mourning
lament

nothing worth remembering
but I must have remembered it
just the same
*******

there was a child
the second of three
beautiful girl child
but ill
always so beautiful
and so ill

each year of her life
she grew more beautiful
and more ill
and more dear

and then
there were the last days
the nightmare days
the vigil

when her little hand beckoned
I hurried close enough
that I could feel
her sweet breath

as she whispered
"pray for me".
I prayed and cried
for both of us
because we knew

and finally
my dear God
she was only
beautiful
and dear

now I know
that a mother grieves
even in her sleep
and wakes herself
keening
*********

dedicated to the memory of
Heather Maureen

Oh Constance...you touch my heart with this..as I have been there and understand keening too well.  You have described it just as it is.  Hugs!  (PS email me, I'd like to talk to you more)

This was so beautiful and a wonderful tribute! The words just touched my heart so much...I can't say I know the feeling but as a mother I understand a little....Take care

Constance
This is a familiar nightmare yet an unfamiliar hell for me.  There are no words powerful enough to lend you the strength and blessings I wish for you.  I am so terribly sorry...know that anyone reading your words is sharing your pain....

I can only perhaps attempt to begin to imagine what this must feel like...  I wish peace to all concerned.
