Anniversary Realized

It took a few seconds after I opened my eyes
to remember what the date was
I steeled myself
literally held my breath
waiting for impact
then smiled recalling the sentry I’d left posted
before I slept
his job well done, I paid him his due
and went about starting the day
no dizziness, no palpitations
no wave of dread
I stepped comfortably into a shower
made coffee, watched the midday news
left for work
just another day

until I realized I hadn’t spoken to anyone who hadn’t spoken first
and though the radio was playing I couldn’t recall a verse
then quietly resolved, if only to myself
not to speak of the date or significance
to anyone else
it seemed somehow justice that I alone should know
the golden worth of silence
when a thousand words won’t show
what it is my heart remembers
this night as I don’t sleep
I would be lying if I said I didn’t hope
you were reliving the same thing

Mysteria---I believe they say, 'Don't'.  I turn to a pillar of salt as we speak.  Thanks for reading and responding.

Cpat Hair---Thank you.  It was not pleasant to write...but neccesary, for me.

Laura---Where ya been, kiddo?  Gotta learn to run faster!  Thanks for your support, Laura.

Sven---I still remember your reply to the post I made anticipating this day and at first I thought I was going to be able to pull it off.  Seems the feelings...caught up with me.  Thank you.

Helen---Thank you for your response of friendship.  Foolish though, no...she has her reasons.  I just needed to write how I was feeling.
