Listening to every heart

walking with

the spirits are not here in
this backyard’s scion
of domesticated grass
and fertilized dandelions

I wave my hand
allow them pass

for I hear some slight
in cottonwood’s murmur
over the hum
of semi and train
calling to me
again, and again

this need to return to
the where to gain
perspective on feel

where it seals
to ratify my real

not having far to go
fortunate ‘tis I in know
where acquire is
tight, in that right,
so I might
travel my feet
to virgin grasslands
where
no concrete
lays before my gaze
to where one looks
into soft morn’s haze

and sees them
walking

to hear chanting
feel the talking
to suffer with the them
that were
to find in air, certain cure

I listen

in the shimmer of
morn’s glisten
under heavy dew of
night
on the trill of cardinal
in the mist of
soft dawn’s light

I listen

upon the swell of
blue’s grass
upon the knell of
hawk’s pass
upon the feel of
spirits that last

I listen

to pause in awe
in eyes of close
in spirits’ rise
I am one they chose
to center here
feel them near
and this to share
with one
who’s dear

I listen

in a loving, cared for state
of grace
as what is written
upon my face
is what spans into
one’s view
that, and the thought
of one who

acknowledges in
confident harmony
all that lies in
this,
my close spirits’
camaraderie
