Sentry Of The Sea
~*Marge Tindal*~

Out across Pemaquid Point
she blinks and sends her light
Guiding home the sailing ships
through the darkened night

Never giving up the sentry
for well-over a century and more
Steadfastly keeping the guardianship
along the east Maine shore

Since 1827,
she has beaconed the ships at sea
Sending some to the briny deep
who did not take her heed

If you chance upon her light
while sailing the pounding sea
Steer clear, Matey, of her granite skirts
or 'twill be the death of thee

*In the history of Pemaquid Point Light
it is noted that the first lighthouse on the Point was built in 1826.
It did not stand for long, as the builder mixed his lime mortar with salt water.
When the new lighthouse was commissioned to be built,
it was specified in the contract that only fresh water be used.

~This one's for you, Nan~

Love this, Marge. I am also a great fan of the mighty lighthouse, how much she has stood for over the years, how many lives were in her hands.

Oh I do love this. Great poem Margie girl!
I have been to Maine and was totaly in awe of the lighthouse's. Wonderful state to visit, but I wasn't real good at eating the lobsters with a head. (really gross)

Bravo...bravo!  I love these historical pieces...such talent goes into taking a piece of history and making it come alive.  The fact that you use one of my favorite subject matters makes it even more enjoyable.  Another for the Library!
