They stole me from my fireside
The band of Salty Cracker Jacks
Warm, my conditioned slumber
Prepared me not for nomadic seas

Waking to sugar heat dunes
I wailed, suffering for my home
Kicking & Screaming child of Billy Hills
Shocked white, against the blue green gulf

They made me dance!
The song of tamborine change
Charming the snakebite
Chanting, fettering me in their web

My skin rumbled tough
I grew the olive tree tall
In rhapsody of moonlight masses
Sultry the melody's fire

I danced the dance astonished
How agile, how lissome still
Kindling the wild things, growing
Home within my limbs

The world stole not
The silken scarves of many colors
Lest you count, the single thread
Of innocence unravelled

With my carriage wrought of cold
I warmed, to travel abroad
Cast into melting cauldrons
Seeking to thieve my spirit

I found kindred wanderers
Among the West Coast cliffs,
Battered Bread, The Beverly clever
Black & white stills, we colored

Coins tossed, heads in air
We skip rocked to the dead sea plains
Cold winds blew bones to ice
7 years the campfire smothered out

By miracle, I caught the eye
Of stormy weather, The sage saw not
I hid beneath the blankets of snow
Stealing a thousand horses home

For even though I rolled smooth
As water does to stones, I rooted
The core where the waltz was prized
Where the lonesome whistle blows

The black almond eyes did miss me
They too, changed with the tide
For though they swayed the hunger
My green eyes, sank in milky contrast

I was the message in the bottle
In the sea of hope, across the land
Of opportunity, knocked round the bend
Unbroken I delivered, change

Only to dance the waltz, fandango
Upon my mother ground, tumbled soft
Welcoming me home, welcoming
The blessing that some things go unchanged

rwood!!  This is such totally awesome writing.  This is just soooo deep, I love it.  Would you mind much if I just tuck this away into the treasure box of jewels I keep??  Incredible.  *s*

A truly incredible piece~

I would wish to know your inspiration, if you'd care to share.

I enjoyed this very much.

Whew!...This one came from down deep for sure. Must have been bottled up. Thanks for finding a connection in this. Everyone, your comments are deeply appreciated.

Gentle Spirit: You can keep as you like. I'm honored.

Thanks Marge! I'm happy I provoked you to question my inspiration. It's a very condensed life story. Very tough to convey but I'll try in part...

My father joined the navy when I was 5. I experienced many journeys, physically, and emotionally. Always being the new girl was very hard. There is joy in tasting worldly culture, music, dance, and food for thought, but many don't realize the pain. Of always trying to fit it. I was incapable of doing so. I was homesick all my life. For simple reasons really. Roots. No matter how accepting you can be of other people, sometimes, you stand out as a reminder to them. Non-conformity. They hate you and try to steal what it is that makes you special. But I clung to my many colors. My essence. The thread of lost innocence was anger. Anger from being expected to conform. To be them. And of course I never could. The dance however is my reaction to the pressure. It was my escape from ridicule while still being able to be myself. No one questions the movement, as long as you "seem" to go with the flow.   I am home now! After 23 years, I am home. And grateful I fought the good fight. To be myself. No matter where I go.

Anyway   Your inquiry as a sister poet was an honor. Thanks!

Sincerely,
Regina

Regina ~ I was a Marine Corps brat so I know how you felt.  I believe I went to 26 different schools and the challenge was always the same.  My mehod of "belonging" was sports, especially baseball.
Well done!

Again, multi-faceted and a very illuminating explanation, Regina.  Congratulations on holding your own.  I LOVE the stanza which caught others' eye too:

The world stole not
The silken scarves of many colors
Lest you count, the single thread
Of innocence unravelled

VERY artistically written!
