In a corporeal internship...

One disappointment
After another
How many times will I be let down?
Playing with feelings
Like they don't matter --
A smile turns into a frown...

Optimism exchanged with doubt
Cynicism growing throughout

All because:

Meaningless words
Given without much thought
To the hopes they had made
And the depression they brought...

Such a strong sense
Of having been thwarted
Nothing has changed
Except how I feel...
It's easy for views
To become distorted
When Truth expunges the zeal...

Consequently, my spirits wane
Clouds condense inside of my brain

As I brood

Wondering how
Some can show no concern
I guess it all comes back
To the old proverb:  "Live and learn"...

I don't enjoy being pessimistic
These are dealings I try to avoid...
Rather, I tend to be idealistic;
Thus my feelings can be destroyed...

Inspiration can be a curse...
Resurecting Death from a hearse

To taunt me...

Killing me with
Memories of mistakes
That were made in good faith
My hopes and my dreams it breaks...

So many times
I've swallowed my pride
Thinking naively
I'd win in the end...
Hiding the hurt
That built up inside
Proving the point
That you shouldn't pretend
When it comes
To

...Life...

Mark, all I can say is SAME HERE! God its hard, isn't it?
I like this writing a lot, the style and thoughts flowed freely.

"somewhere in time"...I continue to hope that all will be well and good and even through the disappointments, and yes, there have been many...I still hope...

eternal optimist that I am...I enjoyed this! For many reasons!

Sandra, quite simply:  IT SUCKS!  Especially for a person who would never behave in such a manner consciously or intentionally.  This was an old poem circa 1989 which was never completed, so I dug it out and re-edited it just now...

Sunshine, I agree, but it feels good to purge the words of feelings strongly experienced, even if they are from the past...

Sy, actually, that just scratches the surface, but I don't want to go on about it...

i liked it. it was deep. the emotion was strong but not too "in your face".

I'm not crazy...I have papers to prove it!!

Tough skin, but soft heart...We all have it..somewhere deep down. But something that amazes me is, that when I expect nothing, I usually get a great and rewarding return. We are too hard on ourselves. And sometimes not hard enough. To be balanced would be exquisite. "Let nothing offend thee, for your attitude you own, and nothing else." I read that somewhere. I find the disappointments guidelines to where I can start over. Sooner or later you're bound to get it right. Don't give up! The poem provoked me well.
Sincerely,
Rwood

So sad how this seems to come so easy to so many these days, no thought, no care, just "misery loves company" for everybody to thrive on it seems sometimes.  Very well written... like this very much.

Strive for higher levels, if they seem out of reach... Grow, and they will get closer.

nicely done Mark...

like the rhyme scheme and the emotions portrayed are honest as well as not over powering.. leaving some room for the reader to make them fit their own situation..

Regina, thank you for your thoughts.  I agree:  expectations lead to disappointment -- I've learned that a while back.  I've come to a conclusion regarding many things:  "try everything;  expect nothing".  I like the quotation you quoted...  good food for thought.

ThUnDeRkYsS, thanks for your comments.  It is disillusioning how love and care in today's world are very rare commodities.  But I refuse to play that game, personally, despite the cost...  Glad you enjoyed.

Thanks, Ron.  This one is more open-ended and therefore more universal, I suppose.  It started as a song but was never completed, years ago, so I dug it up again and simply transformed it back into a poem...
