There was no love at first sight
between you and me
we were never destined to be.
We met with fingers extended
reaching beyond our grief-
when no medical knowledge
could keep your first love
from slipping beyond
your touch-
you were hopeless and lost.
And me-I grieved for me-
my hatred and I once gladly lay
six feet under-
but I now found it a burial
with far too high a cost.
I thought I saw in you a friend
a little like me.

Glossies of me
brought you smiles and your charm
returned them to me ten fold.
We were as different as black and white,
my world was Laundromats, puppies
and cleaning little chocolated faces
and you clung to the ladder
right smack in the middle
of Corporate America,
still I warmed to find a friend-
someone bumping through life….
searching, and yes somehow
a little like me.

We opened our souls to loves lost,
both laughter and pain
were abundant.
We looked for laughter to wash
clean the pain.
And we talked….
we needed to talk
for histories sake
and for the future.
You were an anchor
in my storm, you were
somewhere safe for me to be.
When you too opened your
deepest pain and loneliness
I knew you were more
than a little like me.

Its been many months
since we have talked my friend
and I
finally stopped counting.
I had thought
you and I would always
be best friends, but
considering the whys and wherefores
that brought us together
I will have to say
that for you
it is a good thing
you don't need me anymore.
I know I still send you smiles
now and then
but have you noticed that
I have started to add
…no need to reply...
I don't do it to make you
feel less guilty, I do it so that I
can stop waiting.
Some day soon,
I too will stop writing
as every day I become
a little more like you.

I am usually not one to read long poetry.

It takes great content and imagery to keep me there stanza after stanza.

This poem had it all for me, with the final stanza tieing up the content wonderfully.

I am no critique, but I loved it.

insightful... and the history presented perhaps painful yet also..one of growth.

Very nicely told.. a pleasure indeed to read
