A rumor in the garden had begun to spread like weeds
that one group of inhabitants had done an evil deed.
" The spices must be innocent " all of the veggies chimed . " for ev'rybody knows that they are sage before they're thyme "

The corn said " Wait a minute here , don't point your roots at me , it wasn't us who did this thing 'cause we're all ears you see "
" Not us " the rhubarb squawked as one ," in this we played no part , you talk about us all the time , and call us names like " tart "."

The peas denied involvement ( which of course did not seem odd ) they always stick together , well , like peas do in a pod .
The carrots were indignant that this nonsense had to stop . Despite their bright orange pigment they 'bout blew their little tops

The leafy crops with rancor stated from their well mulched beds
" Why don't you just lettuce alone and ask the beets instead ? "
And so it went all summer long , none would confess the crime .
They bickered and they argued right up to the harvest time .

And not until ol' farmer Brown did grab his trusty hoe ,
was it discovered underground was where the fiends did go .
'twas they who saw ol' Granny Brown with nothing much to hide ,
when she weeded the garden it was on Ol' Gran they spied .

Though you may not believe this I will swear that it is true .
So don't wear skirts to garden in , or they might spy on you !

serenity ,
Thanks , it's an old story . I think someone even did a song about it once . I seem to remember the line " Don't bend over in the garden granny , ya know them taters got eyes " , but I can't remember who did it .
( I was going to say it must have been something I ate )
Doc

Big grins...and thinking of the "small patch" we worked a couple of summers ago...I think we fed three neighborhoods, at least...
