Pennies = Snowball

pennies, a treat from uncles
or aunts (never Grandma)
    when you’re very young
a big deal, shining
on sidewalks
see a penny pick it up
all the day you’ll have good luck

penny loafers
thoughts bought cheap
   penny for your thoughts

weighty use, in for a penny
in for a pound
pennywise, pound foolish

penny ante card games
taught integrity
but soon someone’s penniless

penny line writers, hacked away
pinching pennies

knew a walking, talking
Penny…

childish fingers learning how to
flip a coin, then
catch, slap
heads you win

wishes on a penny, how many
have come true
perhaps the one I made
for you
plink into fountains

no pennies from the Tooth Fairy
report cards rate nickels, dimes,
quarters
sometimes sprinkled in
bottoms of Christmas stockings
or plastic Easter eggs
molded in machines for odd shapes
                     two quarters, pay up
safer system now,
but free when you utilized
train tracks and
locomotives

swimming lessons promised
diving, bring your pennies
to learn how to hold
breath
open eyes
dive dive and play the
pickup game

Lincoln looks younger with
each new batch

tins, boxes, bottles and
drawers collect
them, multiplying,
multiplication tables and math sheets
show brown dots,
but the buffalo disappeared
from the nickel

penny postcards antiquated by
time as my feet still feel
floorboards creaking while reaching
for penny candy from
jars of rainbows

medicinally inclined, pennies,
sure cure for ringworm
only after soaking
a handful in vinegar a full
day then night
applying with cotton
to ringworm
sores [ow ow ow]
brother still had to have
his head shaved
I got off easy….
my white kitten died

I finger pennies
and remember
Snowball…

Sigh, how many times do the good memories bring in the sad ones of loss. Especially one of a pet at an early age..know that feeling well, but wouldnn't take anything for having that pet..good memories, tender thoughts..well done, Sissie..very gentle smile

Sorry for the loss of *Snowball*   There is a penny saying that I like and use often..  ~ Find a penny, give it away, and good luck will be with you all day ~ Give your penny away, and to whomever you give your penny to, will have a lucky day ~
This is a unique piece that kept my interest all the way through to the very sad ending.
Love and peace ((~.~))

This held me from beginning to end, as usual Karilea, you bring "story" poems to life with such vibrancy and sincerity

Karilea~
A penny for these thoughts would be a gross underpayment~
Beautifully tender in every respect.

Karilea-
You have wrapped your memories of Snowball
up in such a beautiful write...lovely thoughts.
   I agree with Marge...a penny wouldn't
   even begin to cover it..
