El Diablo

Who knew I had prognostic powers?
I just happened to mention the dream -
smoke arching across Highway 50,
flames surrounding the buildings
where I work with two thousand others.

It wasn’t difficult to imagine,
these serene hills may mimic soft wheat,
but nothing burns like dried grasses
in western summers.

When the wind shifts,
circles from the north,
they call it El Diablo -
a devil's furnace,
fuel for pyromaniacs
and nincompoops who toss cigarette butts
out car windows.

And we can’t really blame
the local farmer
who didn’t realize
the misfiring of his John Deer
would sputter sparks across his acreage.
Took every fire fighter in the county
to put that one out.

It may be enchanted,
but no magic shields
this land from man.

Corinne, this is inspiring verse and I can feel you put a lot of thought ot it.  IT's refreshing to read something that isn't just splashed up there on the page, thank you.

Wow, Corinne, you have described this scene so vividly.  Great work!

Very cool write C...
the imagery is sharp, vivid and cleverly done with your vocab and phrasing.
What always impresses me most about your work is that you can write about anything and make it your own.
A true sign or measure of a talented poet/writer.
well done.
take care

brilliantly described,
fantastic ending, an epiphany reflected, it seems.

Vivid and beautifully told. Fires are so beautiful to watch when they are controlled but how dangerous they look when they rage uncontrollably.

Corinne--Fire and dry hot days...a deadly combination. You tell it so well in this poem. We have fire raging behind our house right now, in the Angeles National Forest.

Kathleen, I feel it could still use some honing, though, but I thank you (and I know what you mean about splashing words on a web page).

Thanks, Lone Wolf!

JM, you are too sweet, thanks, lady!

VAS, thank you kindly.

Ahhh, Marge, but I keep forgetting how to "send," seems it is much more difficult to do, yes?  The interesting thing is that I was on vacation the day of the fire!

Nan, I let these things eat away at me. I talked to some fireman and asked them why they don't make it a regulation to force property owners to cut the grass back along major highways. Where I used to to live, in the Bay Area, they were much more concerned, but they had lived through the Oakland Hills fire, too.

Hey, Brian, thanks! Fire is a real problem here!

Martie - I hope they get it contained soon! Earthquakes and fires, the two banes of California living!
