With Time To Waste

Jets flew with propellers
When we had time to waste.
Cars moved fast and bikes moved slow.
And a days worth of fun came in a row.

We played marbles, around the world,
Sticks became guns.
We shoot at will.

We love with a whisper
And a reddened face
We cry when it ends.
Someone’s moved away.

Roads are paved
Buildings rise.
Fences turn into brick walls.
We take with us what we give to others.

I said to myself,
When I grow old
I’ll think for myself
And never be told.
I’ll play when I want
And work when I need.
Oh, will that day ever come?

To live by my own rules.
I’d have my own tools.
And dad would give advice
But by my laws I would rule.

Wisdom is mental motion
Favorite actors pass away.
The good old songs are never played.
But the memory stays.

With dreams at bay
Watching the days become years
And then they drift away.
Just a little reminiscening

Do not fear going forward slowly,
Fear only standing still.

A multitude of memories here Shadow. Oh, how I remember thinking how I would "play when I want And work when I need" ... great ponderings, much enjoyed!

Best wishes,
/Kit

Ahh, Shadow, when all is said and done, only the memories do we keep. Yes, I remember all of those very well, and you did a lovely job of bringing it back to the front..enjoyed very much..very gentle smile

I love how you contructed this, great social commentary on the changing tides...I especially like the first half and then the section where you speak of how you were/are going to be when you grow up.  Great poem.

Nicely presented and ripe with thought.  I figure:  it's ok to grow old, as long as you never grow up...

Thank you Kit, JLR, Logan, VAS and Mark, my centiments exactly. All we have to do is close are eyes in memory and we are there. Then open them and realize that most of our dreams of then have come true today. Dan
