You Came Gently to Me

You came gently to me
as I sat in deep shadows
and wrapped long affectionate arms around me.
You lit a candle in the corner of my sorrow,
but would not let me rest there.

You took my hand and led me through
an English garden, where soil had been worked
by hands that know the future gift.
A garden where the flowers never die,
for they remain etched in the mind,
so splendid the spectrum of petals
tended with love.

You sailed me on the high seas in
a vessel of hope
and we skimmed the crests, and caught
silver dreams in a dreamer’s net.

You took me to places I had never seen,
opened the deepest canyons of thought,
pulsed rhythms of passion through my veins.
wrapped me in a blanket of peace.

All of these things are written on a magic slate.
You have taught me to open the most intimate
depths of my essence
and place them in words and phrases
in such a way that they would
turn my sorrow into deep contentment.

You are the poet in me.
You came to me so gently, in silent footsteps
as I sat in deep shadows
and made me write poetry.

God has scrolled all of my words
and all the verses ever read
in the hearts of those who love poetry
so that they will remember every flower
in the garden of colors, His gift of fragile beauty,
that never dies

And you, the poet in me,
have given me new life.

What wonderful visions, an internal "being" with a name....

let the Poet out, Lady Santos, to visit us often...

This is one of the most special poems I believe I've ever read, it just hit me about half way through it.  There really is a poet inside of us and this is like speaking to that person, Elizabeth, this one is a keeper. Thank you for this.

Now, I remember seeing earlier that you said that you wanted to work on your free verse. . .

After reading this, all I can say is. . . why??

Wonderful Liz. . . really shows the depth of feeling. . .

I love this, Liz.  So eloquent throughout.  We all have a poet inside that keeps fueling our verse.
