"Mary Kate"
© 2002 Brian Eggertsen, All Rights Reserved

Verse 1
Slowly a cigarette burns itself out
in an ashtray by his bed side,
looks at himself in the mirror
as he wipes the sleep from his eyes.
Slowly he crawls from the soaked sheets
and lights one more cigarette,
walk towards the cold kitchen floor
with Mary Kate still in his head.

Verse 2
By a small radio in Kentucky
sits an old man with his only,
picture of pretty Mary Kate
from back in nineteen twenty three.
He pour himself one more drink and
lights yet another cigarette,
as tears roll down his ringled face
with Mary Kate still in his head,

Bridge 1
Mary Kate is a young girl from Brooklyn
she's a Marilyn Monroe of her time,
and daughter of a famous florist
she is the lost rose that nobody could find.
With that long brown hair and big green eyes
she is every gentleman's perfect dream,
with a six to eight job she pays her dues
he once wrote in his leather diary.

Verse 3
A cup of cold coffee stands untouched at
the edge of the kitchen table,
next to a note and a red rose
"Mary Kate, unwrap my cradle".
A pair of glasses has been smashed
and the front door is still unlocked,
another battle has been lost
another precious life has stopped.

Verse 4:
He's written his last word in his diary
about his sweet Mary Kate,
and the old radio is dead
as his dreams has begun to fade.
The old letter's been thrown away
but the photo is still hanging on,
Old Francis has left the building
The invisible man is gone.

Bridge 2:
An old lady read the paper next day
and she was choked when she read the line,
Mr. Fransic Oldman left us last night
he lived to reach the age of ninety nine.
She was the only one at the funeral
but suddenly a man in a dark suit,
came up to her, gave her an envolope
with teary eyes he said: "This is for you".

End:
She opened it and this is what it read:
"I was blessed to meet you Mary Kate,
through my life I wanted you to have my heart.
now if you're reading this then it's too late.
I can see that you are still the lost rose
now my chapter is but a memory,
I want you to have my most precious things
your photo and my leather diary".

Add:
Slowly a cigarette burns itself out
by the picture of Mary Kate....

Brian this was a nice painting you have painted with your words. A little on the slow side, but very good.
