A girl in her teens
Avoids the mirrors in her room.
She tries on her clothes
Terrified she grew overnight.
The girl has a boyfriend
She reads too far into what he says.
Hearing his voice
Saying the same as the one inside of her head.
The girl is cutting peppers
On the cutting board in the kitchen.
She looks at the knife
Wondering if she should try.
She reads books about special girls
Who share the disease.
With her diet coke her friends regard her
Of a scary, complex, inhuman thing.
The girl is so fat
But she can't seem to lose any weight.
She's as huge as a whale, shapeless blob
With bones sticking out here and there.
The girl is so full of anger
With underlying disgust and fear.
She's fragile and cold
And she's about to break.

She's about to break.

- The knife is for cutting, not slitting wrists.  I don't now if it's sheer desperation or just proof of my rapidly diminishing sanity.  If you are or have ever been like me, dear God tell me.  And I'll give you my e-mail address.

"And you're my obsession
I love you to the bones
And Ana wrecks your life
Like an anorexia life"
- "Ana's Song", Silverchair
Craig, "yo no puedo mas sin ti"

A friend and I were talking about this same situation the other day. We just do not understand girls today and their eating disorders. ( A friend of ours is stuggling with one and so the topic was in the air. ) Look back at old Beauty pagent photots and Ms. America etc etc...Marilyn Manroe for god sakes wore a size 16! And she was gorgeous!Big is beautiful! ( OR atleast thats what we keep telling ourselves. HeHeHe) Hope everything gets better there...THe poem was very well done. It kept my attention. Thanks for the read.

You wouldn't worry about what people thought about you if you knew how seldom they did.

I have been in a simular situation. It wasn't because of an eating disorder, however. But I can still relate in many ways. Angelbrat32087@aol.com if you would still like it, anyone can feel free to contact me at any time. Take care.

I know how this feels, to swing moods relating to yourself... I often find myself talking about how fat i am... etc. i used to more than i do now... When my boyfriend dumped me... Eating disorders are the pitts, self hates just as bad and i think we're all a victim of this...

Thanks for sharing silleallie@hotmail.com

I can't act like I know what you're going through, but i do know how it feels to see somebody I love diminish before my eyes....
I hope things get well soon.

Interesting topic to write about, Bel. I always enjoy reading your poetry for the amount of power you have in your words. Just remember though that if these girls are happy, they isn't much you can do. I know a few people that are very happy with being twigs. Anyway, thanks for sharing this piece and I hope to see more.
