Dad how could you leave me and never show regret,
Was I that un-important, was I that easy to forget,
You never tried to contact me, like you'd done nothing wrong,
As if leaving without an explanation was how you'd planned it all along,

Was I not pretty enough, not good enough to raise?
Did you shun from me in disgust, were mom & I a phase?
All I ever wanted was to know you, to come home and hear you call my name,
But all this time I've been waiting, hoping & praying, every answers been the same,

No he hasn't called, and no he never wrote,
He didn't send a picture, not even a simple note,
Dad won't you tell me what it was I did to make you go,
Please don't sugar coat the truth cause I really need to know,

Mom always said you left because of her,
But you've been gone for oh-so-long and now I'm not so sure,
Well Dad I've almost given up but someday I will find you,
Prove that you missed out on a lifetime of love from a daughter you never knew,

Why did you just leave me, why did you never write,
Do you know of these tears I cry for you deep into the night?
Do you know that I still miss you, though I've never seen your face,
Do you know that unlike clothes and cars, dads you can't replace,

Dad I wish you could have cared for me or wanted to see how much I've grown,
I believed someday you'd come back for us, but I guess I should've known,
But Daddy don't you worry cause mom and I are doing good,
We don't need your help and momma said we never would,

Momma says I shouldn't care that you're not worth the hate and pain,
But I want to believe you loved my once and someday you might again,
Are you as scared as you were than, has time not calmed your fears?
Has the pang of guilt because you never tried brought you any tears?

I now know that I'm fighting a losing battle, you'll never come back for me,
It's a fate I don't want to face but I'm past the lies and now I clearly see,
Daddy you were wrong, you missed out on me because you were afraid,
But Dad although, you may never know, I'm the best mistake you ever made.

I'm with on this I too had a father who would not respond to me but I have been forunate enough for him to change his as I hope it will happen to you too. I wish you all the luck and don't quit, never stop with the hope it will all pay in the end. The pain is hard and you have a person here if you need one, just to let ya' know. We all do sometimes. Beautiful peice... keep your head up. /Nick/

I enjoyed this one. So sad.....so full of emotion. Your dad truly is missing out....I couldn't imagine how somebody can up and leave their child, but anyway i did like this. Hope to see more.

When I saw the title I thought of that Sheryl Crow song " My favorite Mistake"...Nothing like that though. I liked this alot...I can relate in ways...Actually- It's more like I can EASILY understand it..The pain you feel. I thought you did a wonderful job her expressing yourself. Be glad your mother wasn't as foolish as your Father. I  know I am...I have the highest respect for my Mother.Amazing woman- as I'm sure yours is. Terrific job here.

Well, hey, I am not going to tell you about how my dad left my family because I really do have the greatest parents in the world and they've been married for 30 years almost. But I am going to tell you about how GREAT this poem was! I haven't read a poem this good around here for quite awhile...and though some stuff is corny and should be rearranged or changed...like the words "oh-so-long" overall the poem was awesome and very full of emotion. I am really sorry that you have to go through this and I know you probably think about it every single day. I can't really relate and I can't even imagine, but I think that one good thing came out of it...it made your mom and you both stronger and it also made a great poem like this one. It was a long poem too, but it totally kept my interest the whole time. Keep writing about stuff that affects you so deeply. I think deep issues that we feel strongly about, bring out our best writing. Obviously, it did for you. Great job!

This is so sad, yet you expressed it so well.  The fact that your dad left you is so sad, but you are a  strong person.  Thats the good thing!!
Hope everything is going ok!

Thank you all so much for your advice, your replies, and your interest in this poem, but most of all thank you for your support and for sharing a part of yourselves with me.  It means more than you could ever know. I have a hard time understanding why I feel hurt and miss someone I never knew. How can you lose something you never had? I carry your words in my heart and they strengthen me.  Thank you all again, your support means so much.

This is such a sad poem.  I have no words that I believe would help heal your relationship with your dad.  All I can say or wish for, is that I do hope things do get well for you.  Thanks for sharing
