In an upside-down garden

Adults look at me and say
"she'll never understand, she's just a child".
Hair in braids, seperated into pigtails,
taller than some, but shorter than most,
but I don't think I'm a child.

Adults look at me and say,
"her life's been a perfect one, she's just a child",
just because I dress kinda nice,
in the clothes I buy myself,
with the money I make.

Adults look at me and say
"she could never know pain, she's just a child",
but they aren't me,
they don't know my pain,
just because they don't see it.

Adults look at me and say,
"she could never know love, she's just a child",
with my hair in these braids,
just to annoy the one I love,
because his way of saying how he likes me is making fun of me.

Don't tell me I don't understand,
I'm not the one who's ignorant,
just because I wear my hair in pigtails,
and I'm not the same age as you,
doesn't make me a child.

Don't tell me my life is perfect,
you're not there when it isn't,
you've never rescued me from my fears,
you've never heard my father yell,
just because I dress nice doesn't mean anything.

Don't tell me I don't know pain,
my friend was murdered,
did you know that?
Just because you see me as a child,
doesn't mean I don't know pain.

Don't tell me I don't know love,
because that's one thing I have knowledge of,
I know all about broken hearts.
Don't tell me that I'm not like you b/c I'm a child,
because I can tell you you're wrong.

Someone once taught me that it doesn't matter what other people think of you as long as you like yourself.  That's what I live by.

I totally feel you on this one.  So many people think that just b/c I am only 14, I dont know pain, or love, that I must have a perfect life.  Its not age, its maturity and experience.  I loved this one.  Great job!

You have spoken for me and all of us the best way I have ever seen. I couldn't count how many times I've heard those words come from 'their' mouths. The last 4 stanzas were really the ones that gave the most thought to this poem, espeacilaly when they are coming from your side or your life. Thats what makes this poem as wonderful as it is. I'm only 16 and by looking at this poem alone you have gone through as much if not more experiences in life than me. More power to ya... /Nick/

I used to be able to relate to this, but people haven't bothered me with the age thing for a while. ANyhow, nicely done.

I like this one Allysa.  I'm sure alot of teens can relate. I liked the use of pigtail braids....Thats like the national "child" hair-do. HaHa. (Though I love to wear my hair like that) Thanks for the read.

Well, in case no one knew, I'm only 14 years old, and I have my own opinions and things.  Everyone is always trying to change my mind about things because they think they can.  Well, they can't.  I may not be an adult, but I'm smarter than a lot of them and I DO have my own opinions.

Glad ya all liked this one!

And Dopey, the only reason no one bothers u is cuz your special!

POWER TO YOU!!
I really like this piece. It sucks when you're younger how people tell you that you know nothing of pain, love etc. Adults know everything too. NOT!
I liked the last part because you're really making a stand. Stick to your guns, alright? Don't let anyone tell you that you know nothing because you're a child.

Hey,

I really like this poem, its powerful, well written, and all around outstanding. You have really out done yourself on this one. I think it’s my favorite of the entire list of poem you have written that I have read. Thank you so very much for sharing. I enjoyed this so much I am putting it into my library. I hope to see more work just as good or better than this in the near future. Until then

Allysa,
I am liking this one...though I am almost 20 years old...there are still people who say you "dont know what you are talking about" and that "i wont understand".  True..at our young ages we have ALOT to still experience but some "grown-ups" dont seem to understand or remember that we go through alot in our younger years. Thanks for sharing...this was great!!

This is in all honesty one of the most amazing poems i've ever read...

This caught me up so much in it... It was really fantastic...

You wrote with such Authority and Confidence, and yet in a role where you had been put down, belittled...

This is truly a fabulous fabulous piece and you deserve a million compliments for it

Right now I have a lot of people telling me that I don't know enough to know weither or not I should try and stick with Justin.  They tell me I can do better, and I tell them that I don't want to.  I don't know what's up with that boy though.

This is awesome, Allysa... This spoke for everyone under 18 here, I think.  Ignorance in adults is so frustrating on our part.  I understand exactly what you're saying.  I LOVED the way you broke the poem into one half of what they say, and other half being your response to it.. Very creatively written.  I really enjoyed this one.  Thanks for sahring!  Awesome work.
