Alzheimer’s Game

Every day is different
And every day’s the same
There’s no winners- only losers
When you’re playing Alzheimer’s game

While he no longer remembers
We can’t seem to forget
We ask loaded questions
Playing memory roulette

Why can’t he remember?
It all seems so unfair
The cards are stacked against us…
Playing reminiscent solitaire

On good days it’s as if he knows us
…those days are really nice
But there is no real way of knowing
It’s a game of chance – a roll of the dice

We speak of the past
Recognition as our goal
But the cards have been dealt
And there’s no ace in the hole

Every day is different
And every day’s the same
There’s no winners- only losers
When you’re playing Alzheimer’s game

So much sad truth in this - you've written it very well.

You have done an excellent job of describing  how it feels to visit someone with Alzheimer's disease. Then we are left to wonder will it happen to us.

write on, sista!!

it's amazing to me the selective memory process....

maybe you should consider checkers? i did... might get to king the king and get queened or something but then again, with my luck, it will turn into a game show... and i'll be queen for a day! rofl......

sorry, umm... that was my poem, this is your poem....

and i must say, i enjoyed it tremendously!!

First ... it's really nice to see you here !

Your poem is poignantly portrayed.
I wanted to share one with you that I did some time back - in the hopes that it will help others understand loved ones who are caught in the maze of Alzheimers or senility.

There were some insightful replies to this piece and I hope you'll find time to read them.

Sad words but oh so true!  My biological father is suffering from this disease right now and I could really relate to this poem, even though the two of us were never close...thanks for sharing!
