A freezing Yankee winter-
In the snows of Valley Forge.
Feet wrapped in rags, and starving-
They bivouacked there with George.

They fell alone, to Indians,
As they opened up the West.
Fate it seems, will settle...
Only for our best.

The fathers of our country-
Lie in unmarked graves, I fear.
They saw and did their duty-
And their honor, they held dear.

They fell at Chickamauga-
Antietam, Vicksburg, too-
Some died in Rebel uniforms-
And some in Northern blue.

Europe, the Pacific-
Korea, Vietnam...
Our finest bore our banner,
And also, Desert Storm.

The died by tens, and hundreds-
Most childless, in their teens...
But they fathered our great nations,
And they live on in her dreams.

You've made an honorable tribute to the soldiers who gave their lives and especially the young soldiers that would remain fatherless in the physical realm, but they did father a great nation under God.  The last few lines that tell of these young men really opened my eyes of understanding.   Thank you.
