Listening to every heart

How Like Mothers

how like mothers
but
not to say only mothers do it
fathers, perhaps, in wills
last testaments
provisos…

do so…

say the truth…

but mothers….

mothers
put down for, or to, their children,
in grand black and white,
their thoughts

fathers sometimes rant,
or rave,
or wave them off, or hug, but refrain
from words
that choke throats

mothers…

put it in ways that cannot be taken
back, as sometimes words
get carried away
willingly in winds of argument
or even simple
discussion as thoughts of
why am I here impede

so no one is really listening…

mothers, in various styles
colors and sleight of hand, write out
their children’s history…

…announcing the birth of our child…

…please RSVP for a birth’s day….

…you should see the scrape on her knee
after the fall
from her new bike…

…he qualified today, after scrimmage
for the football
team…

…please attend the graduation

…wedding

…I’m sorry to say that they divorced…

so, when children do,
what children do

even when it destroys dreams….

attention to particulars required,
that which attaches itself to hurt and pain
long past childbirth

women put down their disappointments
directing them to their labors…

before the will
before the rant

in black/white, in hope they will either
read,

the tangible message

or destroy

what could not otherwise be taken back, but
had to be given

nevertheless…

then, then, we stand behind our word,
no matter what hurts
no matter grievous pain

lessons

lessons still to be taught…

still….

loving the child of the womb

even love cannot go away
when disappointment

rears

so we trace our tears
in language of the heart

do not be a child whose mother needs
to say

I wrote you off

be a child whose mother sends a card

even if you haven’t done much

but the words still read

I am proud….

for mothers….

put it in black
and
write

Karilea~
You've penned the heart of many mothers, my friend.

I've shared this one with those in my life
who can closely identify with it.
Thank you~

Well I really indentified with this one, as outside of my granddaughter there is no other person living I love more than my son.  What saddened me were these lines:
"do not be a child whose mother needs
to say
I wrote you off", as I work with some of these kids and it is not their fault the majority of the time.  I am sorry to say that I blame the parents for children that get "written off", as there is not a child alive that can not be upstanding with lots of love or tough love, but either way, they can be saved if ysomeone has the inkling to do it!  Wonderful write and this Mother's love is always in black in white, and signed with a kiss!

If I made you smile today then I did my job!

In looking for a poem with the word "wedding" in it, today, to give to a new promise, I came back to the archives and found your response, Mys.  And I thank you for that awakening, of what you took, and put a new spin on how like mothers, we can really be.

I had to read my poem again, to realize where I had been, and what I had, personally, a need to do...and realize even more today, that there are more and more parents...who do just that.  In my heart, I know they do not want to write any child off....

yet...

it does happen.

Thank you for reading...and leaving behind comments that weight the poem judicially.
