The road ended at a churchyard,
The white building surrounded
By tombstones faded
And standing at odd angles
On rolling hill.

I stopped and as no one
Was around,
Walked newly mown grass
To peer at names and dates
Of those who now
In silence guarded this place

1848,
1865,
1872

Age 1 yr
Age 18 yr
Age 1 day

Soldier
Doctor
Mother

Everyday people’s ends
Became the beginning
For me

I left quietly,
out of respect...

knowing I knew nothing
of these pasts
or my future

And continued to wind
My way back to
roads and thoughts
more traveled
Than these

Contemplative stroll indeed.

Great impact at the end....reminding us that much is left behind, and we should stroll the lanes of buried secrets more often...

well done Sir...

Geez I'm glad I'm not the only one who does that. I silently pay tribute and imagine entire lives when reading the obituaries as well. Thanks.

Interloper... does one well to take such strolls from time to time I think...  More than you wanted to know...but I feel like "talking" so...
There are many small church yards in this part of the country, and I have an odd hobby of driving back roads just to see where they go, so I have come across several. Somettimes I stop...read the stones a while..and remember how short life is... how many stories there are I will never know... and it humbles me in many ways.. Thanks for the comment me friend...

Lady... you are kind with your words..and for that I thank you. The impact perhaps is too personal for most people to understand or take anything from this piece.. and I find more and more the words I want to write come from places extremely personal and private..places which make little or no sense to anyone without some explanation... maybe that is a sign I am truly at the place..I should consider not writing.

Thanks to you both for the comments.. they are greatly appreciated!

RS... Lots of things to contemplate..and lots of stories untold. I don't think you are the only one by far who looks at the passing of people and asks."What was their story? Would I have liked them? What could I have learned from knowing them?"
Thanks for the comment...it is greatly appreciated!

This topic reminded me of times in high school, during assembly, when I would be seated with everyone else in the auditorium, and I would wonder how everyone's life would unfold -- where they would be in 10, 20, 30 years or more;  if they'd still be around...  would they be happy?  Successful?  Lonely? etc...  Same kind of feeling, I guess, as pausing a moment to reflect on cars in traffic -- that every single person out there has so many stories to tell -- most of which we'll never know...  Anyways, a stirring concept you've raised here.

I love graveyards...I too like to read the inscriptions and wonder about the love offerings. Sometimes me and the girls go just to clean "forgotten" graves...Thanks for reminding me. It's about that time again!
