Tiny luminaries
Sprinkle the lawn with light
Twinkling emissaries
Of sweet summers night

Romantic stories told
Likened to a starry sky
From ages young to old
We ever wondered why

Why does the firefly glow
How long can it stay alight
These are things we long to know
Gazing in wonder at their flight

The question answered here today
Could they but not let it hide?
The firefly glow they say
Is due to nitrous oxide

I'll pretend that I never found
The article in which it explains
The glimmers glowing near the ground
After the summer rains

Why, Poet, they are magic, every child knows that, and I never outgrew that magic...gentle smile

I've never seen a firefly...we don't have them...I've seen glow worms though lol...they sound lovely - rather like your poem...

That has got to be just what I needed to lift me up....I have been in the dumps lately... Not even "alive" enough to visit the forums....but I am glad I did today.....I used to catch fireflys in mason jars as a small girl in Michigan......I was always sooo upset in the morning when they weren't glowing anymore......so I soon learned that they are much better enjoyed in the free roaming enviroment....I never knew that about nitrous oxide though interesting...I wonder what affect that could have had on me as a child??...!!! Well maybe we'll never know.....Great post!!!

Julie :)

Oh Severn! We have a song about glow worms! But fireflies...why! They ARE magic...they flit and flirt and fly on high...and children of all ages run to catch them in their hands, then release them...

PdV...delightful!

I thought this was beautiful and I learnt a few things about fireflies.  We don't have them here in Australia.  Take care.....Sue

Some things are better left unexplored, just appreciated. I miss those little slow moving critters, we don't have them here in South Texas.

I agree with Balladeer .."reality seldom bears the possibility of imagination"  I agree with you, I prefer to see the firefly through the eyes of the wonders of creation!
This is a lovely poem!

I heard that report... but when I see them dancing and twinkling across a field, I'll be thinking magic, not gases. *G* Great poem, PDV!!!

I think "pixie dust" sounds better than nitrous oxide don't you?  Charming poem!

I was just admiring some fireflies the other day when I was camping!

The biological explanation of their light still does not take the magicalness (magicality??) away from the experience for me.  Nature is magical.

Great poem!

I'm all for fantasy at this point in my life, I've had enough of reality to last me a lifetime! Enjoyed!
