I'm thinking in a whisper so no one can hear
Something is happening and of what I'm not quite clear
My spouse has started acting strange...ssshhh don't tell
He may just be getting too old but on the past he does dwell
We went shopping to get the end of the month sales
Usually it is yard sales but bargins sometimes fail
Up one aisle down another, lock up carts with careless drivers
Almost done and about time, too many of them low fliers
Well here is my mate and he looks over the cart- goods
Where is the lamp oil and wicks or dried foods
A shudder down my spine as he wants to get prepared
For what..I can only guess..could be harder times shared
Got the wicks, oil, food and head home real quick
He's so quiet I worry and wonder if he is getting sick
Get in the house begin to unpack while he  lantern hunts
I get the feeling again wondering what he really wants
Lamps all washed and new wicks and fresh oil
Set on the mantel or hanging where they won't soil
Light the lamps, smell burning wick, see black smoke
As it rises to the ceiling making soot ring, no joke
Well all is done and he has such a satisfied look
Sitting in his easy chair as I try to see what I'm going to cook
With a sigh he says now we are prepared for if
If the time comes when our comforts leaving is swift
I've a fireplace and lots of wood for heat
Candles, oil, lamps, wicks, matches, this can't be beat
Just moving back to the good old days we worked hard to leave
Did I miss something or just not good at make believe

What an interesting story... one I think I will have to read again and savor..for its eccentric twists and simple truths..

Loved this ...

Wonderful story...I don't quite know what to say except that it's a reader's poetic experience!

He's been reading the paper, and is now ready for those rock and rolling blackouts soon to wave our way!  Smart man...

now, go get him a bike to set up next to the generator to which you are going to plug in your computer, so we won't miss out on other gems such as this!

Cpat Hair, thanks

ethome, oh, I guess I will have to give up some things.

Lady In White, didn't think of that but he does have a bike!  Now I can go shopping.
