A murmur swept through the office today
The whisper? "The roses are on their way."
Everyone stopped work, anticipating the arrival
Of this testament to a marriage's survival.
Each year, one husband sends to his wife
An anniversary "thank you" for sharing his life.
A dozen roses for each year they've shared
Makes a spectacle at which the masses stare.
Four men pushed a cart with the urn-like vase
As secretaries rushed to clear a place
For nineteen dozen roses arranged into a tree -
It's really a lovely sight to see.
The delicate fragrance drifts down the hall
Brightening the day for one and all.
But perhaps more lovely than the sight or scent
More valuable than all the money spent
Is the sight of a woman brushing away tears,
Eager for the next nineteen years.

I quietly caress a petal from those flowers.
Will I ever be loved for even nineteen hours?

What a wonderful idea for a poem! I did the same for my ex-wife....ok, I used M&M's instead of roses..but the thought was the same..

Suthern girl, if you are never loved that way there is not a God in the heavens...you would grace any man's arm..sincerely

Isn't this a wonderful gesture!?  I would be happy with carnations....or dandelions, if the sentiment to back up the gift is there....

Marvelous!

I think you'll get a lot more than nineteen minutes in! Heck, you might forever and that's the good one!....great poem and I could see all the staff eagerly anticipating the arrival of the flowers.........

I used to send flowers to my wife without any occasion to celebrate....She'd say..Ah! I worship the ground you walk on....sure enough!  she ended up getting all my properties.....ho hum and I tried so hard...  just a little humour!

Suthern
The beauty of nineteen dozen roses cannot compare to the beauty of your face.
Nor could the message they represent be more sincere and lovely than your heart

Oh WOW, what a romantic thing to do.
We were married on the 4th october, animalday, so we made a promise to visit a zoo every year. I'm married 33 years now, but never saw a zoo on the 4th of october (LOL).

Hope their marriage will last a long time, getting more expensive every year though (ha ha)

And Suthern, here some dozen roses for you. You deserve them, writing such a beautiful poem.

A rose is a rose is a rose...I guess...

Balladeer: I agree... and I'm sure she appreciated the effort... assuming you didn't eat them all as you counted? LOL. Thank you, dear friend - for being my friend. *S* I do appreciate you so very much... even if your sweetness does make this ole biddy cry. *S*

Sunshine: Amen! *S* I thought I'd get flowers when I married a horticulturist, but that was wishful thinking. *G* I got lots of dirty laundry instead! LOL. Thank you!

jellybeans: And I love you, dear lady... The wonderful surprise is mine, seeing your name. *S* Thank you!

ethome: That's the best reason of all... when there is no reason except love. *S* And the humor is appreciated... the tear ducts need a break now and then and I'm ROFL @ her getting all your properties. *G* Thank you very much... after all the great scenes you've shared in your song/poems, I'm glad you could "see" this so well. *S*

Sven: Thank you so much. I'm glad you liked! *S*

Elizabeth & Marge: Forgive me for answering you both at once, but your responses warmed this heart. *S* You ladies are blind and prejudiced... and I love you for being so! *G* Thank you so much... I don't know what I'd do without you... and hope I never have to learn. *S* Your support is a treasure. *S*

SEA: I think the sight of Susan's face brought tears to a lot of eyes yesterday. *S* Thank you very much!

vlraynes: Thank you, Vicky... It's so good to have you back... and I appreciate your kind comments! *S*

Titia: Those good intentions are hard to keep, aren't they? *G* But you sound happy without the zoo... congratulations on 33 years! *S* And thank you so much for the flowers. *S* They're lovely and very much appreciated. *S*

Lone Wolf: Thank you very much. *S* And yes, it was a beautiful sight to see. *S*

Janet Marie: I'm sorry I disappointed you with the ending, but I'm glad you liked the rest of the poem. Thank you.

Kit: I'm very glad you enjoyed! Thank you so much... for both your comments and your hugs!

James Michael: You are very kind. *S* Thank you for letting me know this touched you. *S*

vandana: I'm glad. *S* Thank you for reading!

RMW: Thank you so much for that "SUPER". *S* I appreciate it very much!

Seymour: Well, I always see beauty in you, dear Sy... so there! *G* Thank you very much... and hugs and kisses back to you! *S*

Wow.......wow.......Suthern, you really really touched my heart on this one......
I too often wonder if love would ever find its way ..  ..........and how long would it stay..........
I'd caress a petal and sigh.......and perhaps even cry.....

This must go to my library........

Big {{{hugs}} to you dear.......

Wow, I sure wish I was there to see that, but then again through your eyes, it could not be any better I suppose than it was, and so I will just thank you for sharing this great event.  Suthern, I too, would be happy to have "just one rose", if it meant someone cared!  Beautiful poem, and I kept this one to show someone who is also loved like that, that I have to admit I envy, but am happy for them!

Sudhir: Thank you so much! Your kind remarks always lift my spirits!!! *S*

MyEnchanted_Melody: You can't know what your response means to me. *S* The last 2 lines were actually the first ones written... and yet yesterday afternoon, I reluctantly allowed someone to chop them off because she wanted to give the poem to the rose recipient "without that downer ending." I wouldn't allow my name to be attached because the edited version wasn't my poem anymore.   Perhaps that's foolish... but your words are balm... and you honor me by filing this in your library. *S* Thank you so very much!

Mysteria: I understand that envy all too well... I'd settle for just the caring and be absolutely ecstatic... if only. *S* Thank you so much... to know that you like this enough to share truly warms my heart. *S*

Martie: I was thinking of you as I watched them arrive... I'd never seen such a spectacular display except in hotel lobbies and wondered if you ever got such an order. *S* Thank you so much, sweet lady... you're pretty wonderful yourself! *S*
