The Frontier

The rate increased.
As his right foot left the stirrup;
And his gloved hand brushed the saddle
With assurance stamped "U.S.";
With both feet settled
Further into the snow;
And his mount's breath signaling
Like smoke reporting from a rifle barrel;
He knelt within the meadow.
Tracks
Leading to a thicket,
Out the far side,
Down the ridge,
Across the frozen creek
Then up to the cabin
Where a pale New England hand
Stirred stew in a kettle.
Instantly
His heart drummed faster
As the price of land
Went up.

I chanced to read this earlier today...on a re-read....

I see things a bit differently.

It is good to have time to digest, re-read, re-group, come back...

and remark...

amazing bit of difference.
