I used to notice right from wrong
I knew good from the bad
I spotted moral character
by qualities one had.
White hat was good - black hat was bad...
had always been that way
but now all hats are colored with
a dismal shade of gray...

So happy birthday, Peter Pan.
The time has come to fly.
There is no Never-Never land
for folks like you and I.
Sweet fantasy
won't set me free
from all that has gone wrong.
Happy birthday, Peter Pan
It's time to move along..

I always knew a friend from foe..
a friend was always there
who kept his word through high and low
with no cause to beware
but now friends stab me in the back
and foes are much more kind..
can't tell one from the other and
it makes me feel blind...

So happy birthday, Peter Pan.
Blow out those candles, boy.
The world is not a fantasy
and life is not a toy.
I bid adieu
To all of you
I knew on center stage.
Happy birthday, Peter Pan...
It's time to come of age.

I thought that I was educated..
Studied hard in schools
but someone out there somewhere
has been changing all the rules.
Now black is white and bad is good
and love can turn to hate..
now always can mean never
when "I'm sorry" comes too late..

So happy birthday, Peter Pan
There's no gold road to take
to where some wizard gives out hearts
when yours begins to break.
No Robin Hood
to fight for good...
no castles in the sky
Happy birthday, Peter Pan..

It's time to say goodbye.

Except....darn....well, I guess I will go to the theater to get my fantasies, and then,

leave them there....

Well done!

So many meanings, so much to ponder.  Thank you for all your thoughts.  It's sad to come of age.  A pivotal moment for me was when one of our better police chiefs passed away a few years ago and I remembered writing about him in an English class, he was one of my heroes when I was a child.

WOW...very powerful words from your pen.
there is much truth and depth here...the
reality that hits when we remove the

thanks for the thoughts to ponder.

Ah shoot!  I go into "Wendy mode" quite often, and really, really depend on Peter Pan to get me to Never, Neverland, does this mean I have to now face reality, and realize that everyone is human?  Shucks.  This was a great read, and sorry that you "seem" miffed, and hope it passes.

Wow ... bravo Michael!  You've packed so much insight and wisdom into this wonderful piece. I absolutely loved it ... from the perfect flow to the truths and realities it addresses  (but please Michael ... can I just pretend I don't understand?  Cause I don't wanna grow up ... it hurts too much). Excellent writing sweet poet!

Best wishes,

Peter Pan will always fly .......
don't anyone clip those wings, you need them!

Besides, we see things more clearly from a distance.

So dance among the clouds Peter, you can always grow up.................... tomorrow.

'Deer dear heart, fabulous writing love, but you know me and optimism I will always look for the silver lining. It's there but sometimes it's a little hidden. I absolutely love this one, YOU are an excellent writer, and this proves it.

I believe in fairies, magic, dreams and in the good guys.     And you're one of the best kid, as always this shows that you're terrific, and talented.

Take care
love as always

I always expect a special treat when I open one of your poems, Deer One... and you never disappoint me. But the lighthearted title didn't prepare me to be so touched... You've captured betrayal from trusted ones and the resulting doubts in your own judgment perfectly and with flair. It's poems like this and poets like you that keep me from tying my proverbial towel into a noose instead of throwing it. *S* Beautiful work!

Now be warned... if you ever try to leave, I'll follow... or hang onto your ankles and hope some poetic talent falls on my head... *G*

Whoever it was that ruined
your perspective dear,
is simply just a fool
could not have been a peer.

I would really hate to see
you alter your views,
when he's the one at fault
HE should be singing the blues.

We have to be just what we are
and if we see the rosy side,
that is what we're meant to see
not closing off inside.

So take some time,
refuel your lovely soul
and remember true friends
would never sink so low.

Balladeer, I really hate to do this, since I don't like giving 'trite' replies, but there's not much else I can say. I've gotta echo most of the above replies. I really don't know how you pen such exquisite verse, with such deep, impacting meaning, but you do. Even your lighter pieces carry a large chunk of whimsical life into them. Sir, your style is much more than a balladeer, bard, or jongleur. It is more akin to the People's Poet, such life to you bring to us, your readers, irregardless of education, economic standing, or poetic experience.

Bravo, Sir Balladeer!

Oh Peter Deer
You're writely well
Please don't grow up
And I won't tell
About your trust
In black and white
And how things were
And how they might
Appear to some
To be as grey
So Peter Pan
Happy Birthday
Be sure of this
My dear Deer friend
I like your work
Now to the end

How thought-provoking!  But I don't want to think about that...I don't want to grow up just yet!  It was a beautiful read though...if anything, it reaffirmed that I do still believe in whim and fantasy
