For Forever
Virginia Salter

I fell in love for forever
but that’s a long, long time
I was happy with the tether
I was happy with the rhyme.

But then someone
threw in a mode of free verse
and to a traditional poet
that can really be a curse

It takes away prediction
it takes away good sense
and perhaps your expectations
will have no recompense

Where before you had an inkling
what you’d find at end of line
now you just may hit home
with only seasoned wine

A loaf of bread, a hunk of cheese
a glass of wine and thee
was what I used to count on
but now you’ve set me free

Free to be quite mournful
free to be alone
free to find another
more predictable drone.

There’s something to be said
for monogamous connection
it’s quite dependable
in monotonous reflection

But monotony is fine with me
I can get my kicks elsewise
watching other people
find ways to improvise.

..the feelings of "aloneness" keep jumping out at me from these words..how well I identify...your self-expression is marvelous.
