Listening to every heart

Hardwood & Linoleum following LA

perhaps because I was still small, or the
first house had outgrown us, or because the yard
was so big, that the farmhouse turned our house
in Nipomo seemed
big, too

the long expanse of hardwood floored living room was all
that I could see, that, and the fireplace which was not
centered but resided just the opposite side
of the wall that held the kitchen’s linoleum floor
that swayed in the middle

“folks say they square danced in here, Mom” Dad
said, taking her up by the small of her back
whisking her and the babe growing
round and round

until his just holding her brought her giggles,

our giggles following, echoing like marbles along
the kitchen’s linoleum

He could walk the long length of hardwood in his
boots like an Indian, his heritage of long ago
showing in his silent footsteps

and we often caught her twirling on the linoleum
or humming alongside his whistle

I would sit at the front door’s first corner on the left
and make myself smaller than I was
hiding behind my knees
peeking over their scabs
to watch the fire place’s fire shimmer and
dance in a tango on the hardwood’s gleam
the color of the woods multi-hued
in my memories
but mostly recalling
deep golden browns that tinged a bit
of cinnamon warm

that was more passionate than the linoleum

and held no sway

I think both rooms were fit for dancing
and even though there wasn’t one,
the living room could have held
a candelabra

she could have been Ginger
he could have been Fred
they fit the time
they had the soul
and they both stepped lightly
across the hardwood and linoleum following LA

Karilea
If I whisper, will you listen?...
I would rather be silent and write, than speak loudly and be bound.

What I would give for just one marble bouncing on a linoleum floor, Karilea.  Thank you so much for sharing your "bag of marbles" with us.  I loved this one.

nicely told...

funny how perpsective and size change as we get older..and rooms once large enough to get lost in are now, small enough to feel cozy in....
