sitting here in the bookstore,
I am profoundly aware of something,
you are speaking to me
speaking to me in a language
that I was a fool to not see before
not the language of love,
or the language of thoughts,
not even the language of words

no my muse,
you are speaking to me
in the language of books

I look at them,
their spines bursting with
          page after page of
                    thought and meaning

and I can hear your voice
speaking to me in the hum of the fan
so many words that are forming in my mind
but, are they really words?
or, does the mind only perceive them as such?

what is the language of books?

is it a language that only a spine can hold?
or do the spines smile at me
like the faces of the men and women
as they pass by, looking and picking?
each one choosing by spine, by design
the language that speaks to them

do the spines have voices?
do they speak to our hearts?
is that how we hear them?
now with the ear, but with the heart?
and, if the heart hears,
          does it tell the mind
                    what to think?

does it say to the mind
          that's the one we need
it's the one that will take us away
          heal our pain
                    fill us with love
cover us in its light

and so, there they are
in colors and shapes that
          rival all of humanity
light and dark
big and small
in races unheard of
          and in genders never dreamed

I find that I now
understand
the language of books
it's a language
          that I long
                    to master

Sven, This is very creative, and thought provoking...

Read me
like an open
book,
remember
that between
the lines
you'll find
the secrets
that you desire...

I always enjoy your work.

Ahh, Sven, your thoughts are only rivaled, by the power of your words..The spines all say to me, your understanding is only a drop the in ocean of knowledge, so pick me up, and learn another thing or two..very well said..to bring the spines in...gentle smile

What a marvelous ride you have taken us through........where colors, words, books......spines.......ideas.........seem to speak beautifully.....and intellectually.

I'm glad I have joined this ride.....

Thank you

There is an old bookstore near my house and each time I'm in there I half expect to turn around and see you standing there at the shelves...strange, but true.  After reading this I understand why.  It is where you belong!  Both in person and in print.

How many times I have looked at the spines of books until one caught my eye for no reason and knew that was the one for me. Loved this. Can relate.
