Sometimes I want to stop the merry-go-round of life
I want to be a little girl again...an innocent child
the little girl in a hurry to apply red lipstick like mom
giggling and wishing to be thirteen

In a hurry to wear nylon stockings and high heels
In a hurry to get married, in a hurry to have children
now I am not in a hurry at all
Life has hurried by, and I wonder why, I was in such a hurry
Not to be a little girl in mom's high heels shoes

Mom has arthritis and has a knee replacement
but still applies her lipstick every day
I wonder how much time mom has left
as the days hurry by, one by one

I held tightly her soft hand
as her long brown hair danced in the breeze
a man's eyes followed her admiringly
as we walked past the goldfish pond
in tenth street park

I wonder why I was in a hurry
for mom's hair to turn grey and white
for her hands to become fragile with pain
why didn't I realize when I was in a hurry
I was wishing my mothers life away too
I was caught up in being a little girl
I was wishing to be just like mom.

Every child is an artist. The challenge is to remain an artist once he grows up.

Thanks for this, Victoria...I, too, find that I am in a hurry for everything these days...really don't know why when I stop to think about it, but, I just am, and, being from NJ doesn't help either!!     But, seriously...wonderful write...

Vic, I know what you mean. Wanted to grow up so bad, didn't we, and now what?? Wanting to go backwards a bit, personally, now.
Side note, I just heard on a talk show that at midlife women should look for what made them happy as little children. Strive to remember that and go back to it. Hm. Red lipstick doesn't quite do it anymore
This is great for many reasons.

So true, Victoria.  All our lives when we are young we wish to be old enough to do this or that.  Until we get to be old enough and we spend the rest of our lives wishing we were young again.  This brings back memories for me.  Thank you for sharing it.

I would love to hear more about this, these were my favorite lines....
