Stay Awake
Virginia Salter

we believed them, stood by them
those wonderfully powerful lines
“with cords that cannot be broken”

surely cords that strong
are what held our love
we could rely upon them, fully

yet as the years rolled by
we forgot to watch
we neglected to be aware

we did not see the coming despair
we did not notice the hands reaching out
the gripping of the cord, the unraveling

as to a knitted sweater, life pulled,
one long, unrestrained pull,
while we watched not

leaving the cord in a heap
and two broken hearts
that were asleep at the wrong time

Ah... One should always be careful not to snag the threads for otherwise..awake or asleep... it will unravel.
