"Wanted. Young, skinny, wiry fellows. Not over 18. Must be expert riders. Willing to risk death daily. Orphans preferred. Wages $25 a week."

His name is not remembered
could be Johnny, Bob or Joe
But the vision of him riding
is something we all know

Hat perched firmly on his head
bulging saddlebag at his side
"The mail must go through"
and so the rider then must ride

Ten miles galloping on one horse
remount and another takes its place
The rider moves ahead full speed
sweat pouring down his face

At the end of each rider's trek
he passes the saddlebag on
And the next Pony Express rider
mounts up to bravely carry on

Wonderful visuals Sharon, it surely is a picture that comes so clearly to mind ... you've captured it well.  Much enjoyed.

Best wishes,
/Kit

Ahh, Poet, you brought back to memory, a book I had as a boy, with a two page spread of a one of the PonyExpress boys, bent over their mount, riding like the wind. Thank you for the wonderful imagery that brought that back...gentle smile

That was great!  What a ride through history, and I wish there were more of these, thank you.

They were brave and tough and the motto was, "The Mail Must Go Through!"  Very enjoyable write!

The role of poetry is to utter the un-utterable; to open up
spaces of consciousness and resistance; to language oppressions; to
re-language historie
