Their Blood Flows Through Me

before me are my ancestors
laying in their eternal beds
there is my beautiful mother
thirty eight years old
my father sleeps here too
every where I look, I see my family
standing here
I am the daughter of my father
baby of my mother
woman of my own story
flowing through my veins
is the blood of these before me
the blood of nobles, professionals, a minister,
farmers, a horse thief or two, rebels,
a murderer who killed his best friend
in a three way lovers quarrel
I realize suddenly I can barely breathe
my heart starts beating in my temples
knowing their blood flows through me
they are all part of me, but am I part of them
one day many years from now
someone will stand at the foot of my bed
and I wonder, if like me now,
will their hearts skip a beat
and wonder about me

It's always so very interesting to look back at the old family tree and wonder about those relatives and what they were really like. I liked your muse of this...very good!

The role of poetry is to utter the un-utterable; to open up
spaces of consciousness and resistance; to language oppressions; to
re-language historie

As with all passings or changes..we wonder what our legacy will be...

Still as I sit
and watch in tumbling
despair the change
of beauty's grace
I must in stumbling
hopeful ways arrange
the images erased
into memories
of this small passing
as I stilly sit
with tears amassing

1 slick_lady, I wish I could remember all I have ever heard and read about my family.  I can't get enough of "olden days" stories.  I hope you have all of this written down for the next generations.  You did a beautiful job on all the pictures you painted for our minds.  ME

This brings back a recollection of my grandmother, [who was always YOUNG at heart] who said, "don't look too far into your ancestors, as there was a pirate or two..."

Yes....it DOES take all kind to make

You

and

me

I enjoyed this!  Thank you!
