As I peruse the pages,
Of the bards who’ve gone before...
I’m humbled, and would feign lay down my pen.
I read poetic jewels...
And sonnets by the score...
And scarce believe the authors were mere men.

No words are quite like Shakespeare’s,
No humor quite like Burns...
And Kipling stirs in me a martial fire.
And Tennyson, and Browning-
For their eloquence one yearns,
To write effectively is my desire.

Again I take my plume in hand,
And try to form the speech...
To stir one’s heart, illuminate one’s mind.
I fear that such vocabulary’s-
Far beyond my reach...
And not one scrap of art I’ll leave behind.

Ah, think of me in passing-
Another “might have been”...
And carve this epitaph upon my stone.
“Another dreaming drifter-
A brother to the wind...
He couldn’t write, so thank God that he’s gone”.
