Listening to every heart

When I was Mean

perhaps because as an
infant, he had
almost died
their doting was centered
on him

dad had to work two
jobs to pay for
the bills
what was insurance then?
Life, only

so I do not recall the
exact moment of my childish
revenge, but that
must be what it was, looking
back now

because really only brothers
do weird things to brothers
and I was a sister
to my brother,
and he always managed
to get and take my goat
even while quite
young

we don’t do it any more, but
the memories are fun…

it went way back though, the
ultimate teasing…

we shared one room, bunkbed
mates tied together by
siblinghood but I was older
so he got the lower bunk

at aged two and four naps were
still critical [for Mom]
and somehow he had been loved
all the day
so my streak of
ornery was probably showing

so I began, tap tap tap of finger’s
nail on the headboard, in my
deepest, most ominous whisper
that a four year old can have,
said “the boogey man is coming
for the worst thing I knew
of was the boogey man

and he would scream!  STOP!

TAP TAP TAP the BOOGEY man
is coming!

the door to our
bedroom would fling open
mother, in nap-ire of having
to come in to find out what was
wrong
of course
I was napping…

“go back to sleep!” and other
stern admonishments met my
brother’s ears

and she would leave us alone

again

tap tap tap

was all it took

STOP!

“Mom! he’s making more
noise!”

and back she was, now
threatening a spanking if he
didn’t settle down…

heh heh heh…

tap tap

“Mom!….OW!”

for she had not left the doorway
and heard the tapping
and I of course got it in

                                          the end.

my brother's ill health never returned, he is now 6'4", and I am very careful how I tease him....

LOL - This almost reminds me of my childhood, though in this case it was my brothers picking on me. I used to get into so much trouble because of them... I think sometimes it was worst because I was the middle child and the only girl.

~Back again Sunshine! This brought to mind so many instances from when I was mean to my little brother (and of how I eventually paid for it). Eek. Enjoyed this one lots. Thanks for the giggles. *Peace you.

Sunshine--You could never be mean..could you?  My brother was older...and I can still remember my, "Mom, he hit me"...and his, "I just touched her".     Thanks for this!

This reminded me so much of growing up with all my siblings.  My eight brothers and I pretty much got along, but my four sisters seemed to look for opportunities to make our lives as miserable as they could.  Let's face it, sisters  are mean!     Loved it!!

This was absolutely delightful!
You should continue writing more chilhood tales. You really brought a smile with this one.

Oh you were a mean widdle gorl!  You deserved to get it in the end...heh he ....oh how jealousy affects the mind of the youngster.    I enjoyed this very much!

The role of poetry is to utter the un-utterable; to open up
spaces of consciousness and resistance; to language oppressions; to
re-language historie
