My birthstone is a Ruby
Deep red and with cold fire…

Once upon a time
When the universe as we
Know it was not yet
Earth was a young beauty
And the envy of all elements.

Her verdant valleys
Were filled with sweet scents
And flowed with streams
That intoxicated any who
Put their lips to them

Mountains rose
From her flat plains to
Support the sky that stretched
From now till then
Across their milky tops

She had many suitors then,
The Sun looked down on her
With such warmth, that he would
At times forget to walk across
The prairie sky, and Night would
In impatience have to wait
For her turn to stroll.

Night became jealous
And spoke to Ice about earth.
Together they hatched a plot
To end Earths influence.

Night walked the sky that evening
And just before she got to the place
She and Sun usually passed,
She stopped and blocked
The trail.

Ice, was now free to
Begin his creep from northern places
And sneak up on Earth while she rested.

As Ice grabbed Earth,
She felt a chill colder than any
She had felt before and was stunned
Just long enough for the blood
In her veins to freeze where
Ice was holding her.

Sun, in his impatient fashion
Finally pushed past night
As he realized what was happening
In the regions below.
With a great and gentle warming
He made Ice retreat
Freeing earth from the cold grip.

Some say Rubies are the blood
That in Earth’s veins
Never thawed.

My Birthstone is Ruby

What a remarkable and charming legend!  I had never heard of this one, and as there is one for Ruby, I would imagine there must be for all gemstones.

As you unearth them, if you would share them, I am sure all here would find many keepers...

The legends are made up indeed.... perhaps a bit of old lore here and there... but mostly the product of my warped mind.

thanks

Well Mr. or Mz. Warped Mind...do tell, take them all and run with them will you, and I happen to be pearl!  Did I happen to mention I am absolutely enchanted with your writing, it is awesome!  I think it would be great to do all 12 stones, and made up or not, you missed your calling as you should have been a real balladeer!

For you Mysteria.. off the top of my head.. I am sure it can be made better..so you work o nit and show me what you come up with..(grinning)

Legend of Pearl

In the old time,
The time before there
Was land or light
Water ruled.

Many beings lived
In water and paid homage
To the power and plenty
Afforded, and all
Was good

One day
Moon decided to visit this place
Where Water ruled,
But as she drew closer
Land began to rise
And greet her.

Water was angry
And lashed upwards
With tall waves which
Broke off bits of  Moon
And they fell into the sea.

Over time,
These pieces of moon were
Picked up and carried
By some who lived
In Waters world

Today, we still find
These bits of Moon

That's quite the philosophy alright! Maybe that's where they did come from!

Good poem !  An enjoyable read.

The role of poetry is to utter the un-utterable; to open up
spaces of consciousness and resistance; to language oppressions; to
re-language historie
