He is a big old lump of a dog
that dozes next to Nora's knee.
No one ever wanted Nora.
And Killer? Well, he was free.

Flies collect on his eyelids,
fleas dance in his mangy coat.
If Killer doesn't like you,
he will growl, deep in his throat.

Toss Killer an oatmeal bar,
and each time when you walk by,
He will open one eye - and grin,
then plop back down with a sigh.

Children and old dogs deserve
a warm place free from harm.
Killer's place is wrapped up tight
in the crook of Nora's arm.

And Nora? She knows she is loved
as she scratches the old dog's head.
When coins are given these two,
Killer is the first to be fed.

Children and old dogs,
they deserve so much more than
begging in the glare of the sun
on a sidewalk in back of a store.

"A woman is like a tea bag, you never know how strong she is until she gets in hot water..." Eleanor Rooevelt

Your poetry has taken a very stark turn, and the writing of it is appreciated for the reality it evokes....
