I lay awake in early morn,
listening to thoughts usually foresworn
Clasping hands behind my head
I ponder the life that I have led
Then I think of friends I had
resting in peace, but still it is sad.

I wonder why, they and not me,
for there had been enough opportunity.
From youth to old age, I have seen them go,
and each time wondered what they know.
Wrecks to bullet, it mattered not,
for they were gone, the reaper got.

Then I thought, maybe it meant to be,
to tell the others what I see.
You see, I died one sunny day,
a wasp came down, and there I lay.
Almost an hour had gone by,
EMTs working when I opened an eye.

So friends I tell you when you grieve
where I went that time that be.
A soft yellow light surrounded me,
lush field of green as far as I could see.
The feeling of peace I could not describe,
only the beauty of it would make you cry.

In the distance I could see a bridge,
up upon a low slight ridge.
Only one thing could have brought me back,
before I went further to see what I lacked.
My last thought still in my head,
drifting fast with all ahead.

My daughter was being married that very night,
I could not ruin that lovely sight.
I turned my back where I wanted to stay,
returning once more to the light of day.
But friends I tell you , gentle and true,
there will be a time I will pursue.

For where they went, the ones we loved,
was only the beginning of the peace of the dove.
I have known the pain of losses borne,
and hope this helps of those we mourn.
A poem this was really not meant to be,
but the best I could do to help you see.

Gentle smiles to all of you with love and  peace of mind

This leaves me curious as to if that "peace of mind" you felt there you were able to bring back?  And if it has changed your perspective on life?  Many many questions, I guess.      You do write with a wonderful gentleness, Logan.

Not only to say the right thing in the right place, but far more difficult, to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment.

Best gosh-darned 'not-meant-to-be' poem I've read today.
Thank you ... and yes, it does help.

I love poems with happy endings Logan, and may there be many happy endings for many who read this poem, and yes Logan, this does help a great deal to write this type of poetry and the job you did on it was terrific.

Yes, ethome, it is an interesting subject and one that is hard to bear. I appreciate your thoughts and your read...gentle smile

Tovi, there are always many questions about this, no, I could not retain that feeling, maybe ten percent of it, it was too pure for a mortal to have. Did it change my perspective? yes, in many ways...thank you for your comments and questions...gentle smile

Marge, gentle smile, thank you and I am glad it helped. Then it made it all worthwhile as I had questions in my mind on whether to post this or not...gentle smile

Janet Marie, you are most welcome, for more reasons than I can say also. Thank you for your read and comments...gentle smile

Watersign, Thank you for being here and for enjoying, always nice to see your happy smile...gentle smile

Logan, I have not yet read the others' responses...I wanted to tell you my own thoughts, first, to thank you...there are reasons far beyond our knowing of the "why", but my only feel for this is that you are still here not only for your family, but for this family, and for the lessons that you will hopefully share with us all.

For that, I thank whatever reason brought you here, that you are with us, and your heart is full of sharing.

Thank you.

Logan, that sounds like a beautiful place, but I am glad you are here! And it is heartening to think it is true that such a place is there waiting for us.

You are still here because you were meant to give the greater gifts that you give in friendship. I, for one, appreciate you very much, Logan.

Not meant to be a poem?   You certainly did a very good job of making it into one.

Logan--My husband had this same experience...on dying and being brought back to life...the same peace and the light..and it changed his way of looking at things in many ways.  Thank you for posting this..I shall read it to him.
