Southern Welcome

I'm going home
going to Mississippi
yes, it's true
I'm a delta darling
lady from the south
Mississippi mud
runs through my veins
i know...
where dirt feels like silk
the dirt of a cotton field
that kudzu is like cancer
it's green eats everything it sees
seen soy beans grow for miles around
that unripe persimmons make you pucker and hurt
that honeysuckle can be the sweetest tender touch
I've listened to a cricket's concert
danced to the palest yellow moon
made love to lightning bugs in a jar
then turned them loose to chase the wind
dogwood, magnolias, and crape myrtles
wave to me
welcoming me home

"...the rest is silence" (Hamlet)       Shakespeare

'Southern' appears in the title...so I must respond.  I'd forgotten about kudzu and dirt feeling like silk, honeysuckle, I hadn't tasted in so long, magnolias strong, sweet scent still a vivid memory...maybe I need to go home, too.  Helen, thank you for this!

I love this!   Not a biased opinion either! Nope! No way! LOL! tsk tsk..you have forgotten about the wisteria here already? Ahh...I forive you! LOL!
So..if this is true..and I don't read it as that way for I don't like to assume...BUT
If this is truth then anyone coming home here to Mississippi should do the proper thing and drop in to Gulfport. LOL!

I love the descriptions of the south in this poem......well done!   Ya'll write some more now!

"seen soy beans grow for miles around
that unripe persimmons make you pucker and hurt
that honeysuckle can be the sweetest tender touch
                        I've listened to a cricket's concert
danced to the palest yellow moon
made love to lightning bugs in a jar
then turned them loose to chase the wind
                     dogwood, magnolias, and crape myrtles
                               wave to me
                            welcoming me home"

Yep I can visualize it!

The cricket concert starts about dusk dark
every night here in the country. You heard
it. I love it.
